Equality & Diversity
Our equality and diversity strategy
City of Bristol College is committed to creating an environment where learners, customers, staff, governors and other stakeholders celebrate equality and diversity in all activities.
We respect all our students and staff and value their differences.
We do not tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment. We will ensure to the best of our ability that learners, customers, staff, governors and stakeholders are not discriminated against directly or indirectly because of their gender, race, disability, age, religion/belief, or sexual orientation.
We value everyone as an individual and celebrate diversity.
The College Equality and Diversity Policy applies to the whole College community and the Equality Scheme supports the policy.
There are a number of policies and reports you can read on the subject of equality and diversity (require Adobe Acrobat Reader). These include:
- Equality and Diversity Policy
- Single Equality Scheme 2011-14
- My College leaflet
- Equal Opportunities Report 2009-10
- Human Resources Annual Equal Opportunities Report 2009-10
Equality Scheme
This Equality Scheme is intended to set out our commitment to equality and diversity and to demonstrate that equality and diversity are at the heart of what we do.
Three pieces of legislation are central to our Equality Scheme. These are:
- Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 (RRAA)
- Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 2005
- Equality Act 2006
We acknowledge that equality and diversity mean more than the promotion of race, disability and gender equality. We therefore regard the following legislation as relevant to our Equality Scheme:
- Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006
- Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003
- Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003
These laws do not have positive duties to promote equality associated with them but they do apply to employment and the provision of higher education. We will therefore ensure that through our functions, policies and employment practices, we are not discriminating on any of these grounds.
Students with additional learning needs can access appropriate support from the Study Support service offered at the College.
Space for prayer
Rooms are allocated at each centre during the lunchtime period and the end of the afternoon. The locations can be found at the main reception of each centre. These spaces are available to all faiths and can be used by staff and students for prayer or quiet reflection.
Please note that the College is a secular college and our resources are dedicated to learning. No one faith will be promoted by the College, nor allowed to be promoted, at the expense of other faiths. Dedicated facilities will not be provided for particular faith groups, but arrangements will be made to allow for religious observance where and when this is possible, without detriment to our educational offer.
