Survival Guide

Turning up for your first day at College is always daunting, but with a few useful pointers you'll breeze through it:

  • Everyone's in the same boat, so relax, it's better and more relaxed than school
  • Take some time settling in
  • Join the Student Union straight away and get involved in any student induction activities that are taking place
  • Do your homework as soon as you get it, so its doesn't build up
  • Get involved in lectures - you get out what you put in
  • Use the LRC Learning Resource Centre - they are a great place to study, read, learn and meet people as well
  • Head to the College cafe - it's a good meeting point when you haven't yet got your bearings
  • In your first week take up all offers of going out after College. It's the best way to meet people and make new friends
  • Listen to and respect the teachers - make sure you get as much support as you need from your tutor
  • Be positive
  • Be punctual and don't skip lessons
  • Work hard
  • Have a laugh and have fun.

'City of Bristol College is a great stepping-stone for univeristy or employment. Compared to school you have a lot more freedom at College, you have a better relationship with tutors and most importantly, everyone is there because they want to be.

'It is scary coming into a new environment, but remember that everyone is in the same situation and is probably just as (if not more) nervous.'
Laura Cavill, former student governor
