Course Costs and Concessions

What help can I get with my fees?

Would your decision about whether to return to City of Bristol College be easier if you knew you didn’t have to pay tuition fees?

If you fall into any of the following categories you could qualify for a concession fee.

Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

You must bring in evidence of JSA two weeks before the start of your course to the main reception at your centre of study. We will accept a letter from Jobcentre Plus or bank statements.

Employment and Support Allowance in the Work-Related Activity Group (ESA – WRAG)

You must bring in evidence of ESA-WRAG two weeks before the start of your course to the main reception at your centre of study. We will accept a letter from the Benefits Office but it must specify that you are in the work-related activity group.

Entry Level or Level 1 courses (Step up from basic skills)

You are enrolling on an Entry Level or Level 1 course (excluding ESOL) and intend to progress to a full Level 2 qualification next. In order to qualify under this category you must not already hold a full Level 2 qualification.

Level 2 entitlement

You are aged 19 years or over and do not currently hold a full Level 2 qualification, and you are enrolling on your first full Level 2 qualification.

Level 3 entitlement

You are aged between 19 and 24 years and do not currently hold a full Level 3 qualification or above, and you are enrolling on your first full Level 3 course.

Level 3 jumper

You are aged 19 years or over, you are enrolling on your first full Level 3 course and you do not hold a full Level 2 qualification.

Not sure whether your course is Level 2 or Level 3?

  • Level 2 qualifications are equivalent to five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C or NVQ Level 2
  • Level 3 qualifications are equivalent to two A Levels or NVQ Level 3
  • If you are not sure of the level of your course, contact Learner Services on 0117 312 5000

Adult Literacy and Basic Skills

There are no fees charged for these courses (excluding ESOL).

Important information for 2012/13

Please note that if you are starting a new course in 2012, the rules are changing and you may not qualify for a concession fee. You will only qualify for a concession fee under the Level 2 entitlement if you are aged between 19 and 23 and there will be no Level 3 entitlement.

Please note:

  • Photocopied documents or ES40 are NOT acceptable
  • Published fees and fee concessions do not apply to overseas students. If you are unsure of your status, please contact Learner Services on 0117 312 5000
  • Not all courses offer a fee concession and in such cases full fees will be charged

Continuing students

Please note that any changes to funding eligibility will be applied only to new learners. This means that learners continuing onto the next year of the same course may still be eligible.

16-18 year-olds

In order to qualify for your fees to be waived you must be aged 16-18 years on 31 August in the academic year in which your course begins.

Some courses have additional fees (e.g. for a CRB check) which are payable by all students.

Payment by instalments may be available in certain circumstances.
