What are A/AS Levels?

Why choose A/AS Levels?

Image: Four A Level students sit together in a line.A Levels are the natural choice after GCSE if you are aiming for university or haven't settled on a definite career path. With 28 subjects to choose from, you're sure to find a programme to suit your needs. As a student at City of Bristol College Sixth Form Academy, you'll enjoy being part of a thriving A Level Centre, working with new friends and learning about the subjects that interest you. You will also benefit from:

  • A learning environment where you're treated as an adult
  • A dedicated team of well qualified, experienced teachers who specialise in A Level teaching
  • Specialist learning facilities, including IT, labs and Learning Resource Centre
  • A tutorial system which will support you in your studies and prepare you for university or employment
  • A wide range of enrichment opportunities, including field trips, theatre trips and overseas visits

What will I do on the A Level course?

You will choose four AS Level subjects in your first year. Most students drop one subject after AS Level and concentrate on three A Levels in their second year. Universities look for applicants with three A Levels and a fourth subject studied to AS Level.

AS Level is a qualification in its own right but AS marks also contribute towards your overall A Level grade for the subject. All A Levels involve exams. For some subjects, you'll do coursework too.

Some students choose to follow other courses alongside A Levels:

  • You can replace one A Level with a BTEC Award, a vocational qualification where assessment is based on coursework rather than exams
  • In certain subjects, there is the chance to work towards the prestigious Cambridge Pre-U exam as an alternative to A Level
  • You can develop the research skills you'll need at university by working towards the Extended Project Qualification

What support will I receive?

You'll have weekly meetings with a personal tutor who will help you to make the most of the course. Your tutor will:

  • Provide advice and guidance on academic and other matters, both in group sessions and one-to-one tutorials
  • Help you to access any other support or guidance you may need
  • Keep in touch with your subject teachers
  • Monitor your attendance, punctuality and progress
  • Be available for parents and carers so they are informed about your progress

What qualifications do I need?

The minimum entry requirement for a full-time A Level course is five GCSEs at grade C or higher, including Maths and English. For certain subjects, such as languages and sciences, there are other requirements. Check the individual subject entries for information.
