About the course

This course is part time and you are expected to attend college one day a week for the year and commit to excellent attendance.You will learn the theory of animal care as well as spending time in a  practical environment in the animal centre.  The Extended Certificate  is an ideal starting point for working in the industry or progressing to a higher level course. You will need to ensure that you can plan and set aside time each week to complete assignment work at home to meet the demands of the course.

Entry Requirements

You will need:

  • Three GCSEs at grade D/3 to include Maths, English and Science
What will I do on this course?

The course is made up of a series of units covering a range of different animals andworking situations. 

  • Animal health, welfare and behaviour
  • Animal accommodation
  • Animal handling and behaviour
  • Feeding and watering


Who is it for?

This Course is for adults aged 19 or over

 The units are graded pass, merit or distinction. You will be assessed in all of the following ways:

  • Assignment based

What could I do next?

You could go on to the City and Guilds Animal Care top up Diploma Level 2 if you are wishing to progress to level 3 in the future  or enter employment work within a diverse range of animal-related occupations including:

  • Pre-veterinary nurse training
  • Kennel & cattery staff
  • Animal technician
  • Pet store assistant

 You will need to allow for a Uniform Cost of approx. £30.00


You will be invited to attend an interview. Please ensure you bring evidence of your qualifications to meet the entrance criteria to the interview.
