About the course

This course is part time and you could be expected to attend college two days a week.You will learn the theory of animal care as well as spending time in practical environments. These range from visits to pet shops, wildlife centres and animal shelters to the handling and feeding of farm and exotic animals belonging to local community projects. The Diploma is an ideal starting point for working in the industry or progressing to a higher level course. You are also required to carry out 150 hours of work experience in the Animal care Industry as part of the Course Requirement to enable you to achieve the qualification

Entry Requirements

You will need:

  • Three GCSEs at grade C/ 5 or four at grade D / 4 (to include Maths, English and Science)

The course is made up of a series of units covering a range of different animals andworking situations.  

  • Caring for farm livestock

  • Care of exotic species
  • Work experience ( 150 hours)

How Is this course assessed?

To be successful in this course you have to achieve 60 credits across several units. The units are graded pass, merit or distinction. You will be assessed in all of the following ways:

  • Presentations
  • Reflective journal
  • Assignment based
  • Reports
  • Practical
What could I do next?

You could go on to the City and Guilds Animal Care Diploma Level 3 (subject to achieving a Merit grade or above at level 2) or work within a diverse range of animal-related occupations including:

  • Pre-veterinary nurse training
  • Kennel & cattery staff
  • Animal technician
  • Pet store assistant
Additional cost

 You will need to pay £155 towards trips that will take place throughout the year.
