About the course

This course is part of a Full time programme of Study and you could be expected to attend college across four days.You will learn the theory of animal care as well as spending time in practical environments. These range from visits to pet shops, wildlife centres and animal shelters to the handling and feeding of farm and exotic animals belonging to local community projects. The Diploma is an ideal starting point for working in the industry or progressing to a higher level course. You are also required to carry out 150 hours of work experience in the Animal care Industry as part of the Course Requirement to enable you to achieve the qualification.

Entry Requirements

 You will need:

  • Three GCSEs at grade C or four at grade D (to include Maths and English)

 The course is made up of a series of units covering a range of different animals andworking situations.  

  • Caring for farm livestock
  • Grooming
  • Care of exotic species
  • Work experience ( 150 hours)
  • Animal health, welfare and behaviour
  • Animal accommodation
  • Animal handling
  • Understanding the land-based industry
  • Feeding and watering

We will make sure that you have the Maths and English skills that employers need.  

 

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for you if you are interested in animals and have just left school, or you want to improve your employment prospects.It is also suitable if you are a more experienced student who wants to get back into education or change career.

For students aged 16 - 18 years old and achieved a Grade D at GCSE in Maths and/or English, you are also required to attend GCSE maths and / or English classes and resit the relevant exam(s).

How Is this course assessed?

To be successful in this course you have to achieve 60 credits across several units. The units are graded pass, merit or distinction. You will be assessed in all of the following ways:

  • Presentations
  • Reflective journal
  • Assignment based
  • Reports
  • Practical
What could I do next?

You could go on to the City and Guilds Animal Care Diploma Level 3 (subject to achieving a Merit grade or above at level 2) or work within a diverse range of animal-related occupations including:

  • Pre-veterinary nurse training
  • Kennel & cattery staff
  • Animal technician
  • Pet store assistant

 

Additional cost

You will need to pay £155 towards trips that will take place throughout the year.  

Uniform Cost is approx. £30.00

Adult pathways

There is an adult level 2 part time course for those students aged 19+ which will be timetabled across two days. Course Fee is £1285.00 unless you are eligible for funding. Trips and Uniform cost is as listed for the Full time programme. Course code LMP1710A01-1
