About the course

Do you enjoy working with your hands and being outdoors in all weathers? Would you like to develop your skills in growing plants and maintaining gardens, parks and green spaces? This is a College-based course for 16-18 year old students who want to develop basic practical skills and knowledge in working with a range of decorative plants, horticultural tools and equipment. It can lead to employment in the horticultural industry, for example in grounds maintenance or as a self-employed gardener.

This course is Part of a "Full time Programme of Study" and therefore students who have not achieved a GCSE grade A - C in Maths or English will also study these subjects and sit an exam in either Functional Skills or GCSE. Students are also required to attend and take part in Work Experience In the Horticulture Industry throughout the course and complete some home study.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for this course are:

  • 3 GCSEs at grade E / 2 or above to include English and Maths ( or equivalent)
  • A good level of physical fitness to carry out digging and other physical tasks related to the industry.

 

What will I do on this course?

You will study a variety of units, mainly practical. To give you an idea of the type of things you will learn, take a look at the examples below:

  • Working safely in horticulture
  • Understanding soils
  • Preparing ground for planting or sowing
  • Planting trees, herbaceous and bedding plants
  • Maintaining plants e.g. weeding, pruning and fertilising
  • Propagate plants from seed and cuttings
  • Planting bulbs and containers e.g. hanging baskets

Through the course, you will improve your English and Maths skills whilst also focusing on your personal development to progress to the next level.

Who is it for?

You will be focusing on the practical aspects and providing the basic skills and knowledge for those looking to start work in horticulture.

How Is this course assessed?

You will be assessed through regular portfolio assessment throughout the year, by which you will always know how you are progressing on the course and given many opportunities to improve your performance.

You could progress to:

  • An Apprenticeship in Horticulture
  • Level 2 in Horticulture
Additional cost

You will need to pay :

  • £50 towards trips that will take place throughout the year.
  • £25.00 Uniform/clothing
  • £55.00 Safety boots / Outdoor Clothing

All of the above costs can be funded through the Learner Support Fund should you be entitled to receive this.
