Applied Science Level 3

This Extended Diploma in Applied Science course is for young people aged 16-18. It is suitable for people who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress onto higher education courses.

This Extended Diploma in Applied Science course will see students study for two years over a range of mandatory and optional content provides a balance of breadth and depth.

You will develop the transferable and higher order skills which are valued by higher education providers and employers. For example, the study of applied science particularly encourages development of skills such as evaluation, analysis and synthesis.

Modules you will study includes principles and applications of science, practical scientific procedures techniques, investigative project, contemporary issues and biomedical science.

5 x GCSE’s at grade C/4 or above including English Language, and Maths.

For STEM subjects can be more specific e.g. Engineering – 4 x GCSE’s at grade C/4 or above including English Language, Maths and science. Science and/or maths must be grade 5.

Alternatively, a BTEC Level 2 in Engineering (overall Grade Merit) with Merits in the Mathematics and Science units, and GCSE grade C/4 in both English Language and Mathematics.

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will need to provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional, this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence- based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

During this course, you will be asked to complete a range of internally assessed units with most demonstrating a practical element.

You will also complete coursework an assignment-based tasks and will be assessed using a grading scale of Distinction, Merit, Pass and Unclassified. In year one of the study programme you will be required to undertake 30 hours of work experience relevant to the sector, during timetabled and holiday periods.

You will also be assessed through external exams.

After successfully completing the first year of this course, you can progress onto year two or seek employment. The second year of the course offers the opportunity to specialise in one of two pathways: Biomedical Science or Analytical and Forensic Science.

The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant courses. Whichever route you take, you would be able to enter courses such as BSc (Hons) in Chemistry with Analytical Science, BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Applied Science.

Applied Science students need to pay for a City of Bristol College lab coat.
