About the course

Biology is all around us. It is the study of living things: the diversity of life, the structure and function of living organisms and their interactions with the natural environment. This fascinating subject is rapidly changing and having an ever increasing impact on everyday life. Biology is fun and will develop your understanding of yourself and the world you live in.

Entry Requirements

  • 6 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and Maths
  • You will also require minimum grades of 5-6 (BB) at GCSE Science in Core and Additional or a grade B in GCSE Biology
What will I do on this course?

Like all sciences, biology involves testing ideas through planning, implementing and evaluating experimental evidence. The course enables you to gain a deep and well-informed insight into biology and the scientific theory and processes that control and affect it.

  • Component 1: Basic Biochemistry and Cell Organisation
  • Component 2: Biodiversity and Physiology of Body Systems
Who is it for?

This course is part of a full time A Level programme of 4 different subjects and will appeal to Year 11 students who did well at GCSE and want to pursue the study of biology to a higher level.

How Is this course assessed?

Assessment for AS Biology is by two written examinations of 1 hour 30 minutes and each exam is worth 50% of the AS. These exams will be sat at the end of the first year and do not contribute to the final A-level.
