About the course

GCSE Biology provides the basis for studying A-level Biology, or a general background for those wanting to specialise in one or more separate sciences. It is a modern course that will stimulate your interest in how science works. You will study the structure, functions, diversity and interactions of living organisms, and the impact of humans on the environment, also some aspects of genetics and biotechnology. You will also investigate how science works, and be able to apply your knowledge.

Entry Requirements


  • You need to hold grade 9-4 (A-C) in both GCSE English and Maths.
  • Ideally candidates would have previously obtained a grade 3/2 (D-E) in a science subject at school and have a keen interest in Biology
What will I do on this course?

You will be designing experiments and carrying them out.You will apply concepts, develop arguments or draw conclusions related to familiar and unfamiliar situations. You will show understanding of how decisions about science and technology are made in different situations - including contemporary situations and those raising ethical issues.

  • Mature students wishing to update their knowledge
  • Those wishing to enter nursing, teaching or other vocations requiring a science qualification
  • Those having a general interest in biological science and environmental issues

How Is this course assessed?

The GCSE Biology qualification consists of 3 one-hour papers (Foundation or Higher) and two centre assessed written papers on practical work.

What could I do next?

Students could use this to help fulfil entry requirements for higher levels of study.
