About the course

From space research to the depths of the world's oceans, chemists are involved in collecting valuable information. Knowledge of chemistry will give you a greater understanding of the world you live in and could lead to a career which is exciting and enjoyable with lots of variety and opportunities. 

Entry Requirements

  • 6 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths
  • A minimum grade B at GCSE Science in Core and Additional or a grade B at GCSE Chemistry
What will I do on this course?

With your understanding from lectures and practicals you will learn to apply this knowledge to predict or explain phenomena. There are three sections that cover the AS content:

  • Physical chemistry
  • Inorganic chemistry
  • Organic chemistry
Who is it for?

The full-time A Level course for under 19 years olds will challenge you and develop your ability to think like a scientist. Chemists contribute to society in many ways:

  • Protecting the environment for future generations
  • Investigating the chemicals in cosmetics
  • Protecting the environment for future generations
  • Improving the way that new materials are used in mountain bikes
  • Improving the colour and taste of foods
  • Making medicines that help in the fight against cancer and Aids
What could I do next?

Chemistry is often called the central science. It links with all the other sciences and underpins many branches of technology from the silicon chip to brewing. If you're thinking of university, chemistry is a good choice if you want to keep your options open - you may be surprised to know that chemists also work in banking, law, publishing and accounting. There are lots of areas of chemistry that you could go into:

  • Physiological sciences such as anatomy, pathology or neuroscience
  • Biological sciences such as zoology, botany or genetics
  • Chemical sciences such as biochemistry, marine or pharmaceutical chemistry
  • Agricultural or food science
  • Medical sciences such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacology or toxicology
  • Chemical engineering
