About the course

It teaches you how to create 'advanced' 3D drawings in AutoCAD using: surfaces, meshes and solid modelling. Learning is through hands on use of AutoCAD in 3D, all under the guidance of an Autodesk Approved Instructor. 2D AutoCAD drafting experience is required. This is a flexi course - you will be able to book 20 sessions with your dedicated tutor to use within 12 months of booking.

Entry Requirements

You will need an interview for this course. Interviews are held on Tuesdays at 4pm in the CAD room at College Green (Room 6W9). You don't need to book in advance, but allow at least 1 hour  - the time required depends on the number of interviewees who arrive on the day.

It is recommended that you have:

  • a working understanding of English & maths
  • intermediate to advanced 2D AutoCAD user, or other 2D CAD system
  • the ability to use Windows based computers confidently
What will I do on this course?

You will learn how to create & collaborate on CAD design drawings using AutoCAD in 2D, covering:

  • 3D Surfaces  - Helix, Sweep and Loft commands  
  • Building Wireframe Models: 3D Views and View Ports
  • Creating Composite Solids
  • Creating Models from 2D Profiles
  • 3D Navigation and Dynamic Visualisation
  • 3D Mesh Surfaces  - 3D Mesh
  • Editing Faces and Edges
  • 3D Surfaces  - Extrude, Planar and Revolved Surfaces
  • Creating Solid Primitives
  • Visualisation  - Render and Lights, Materials, Motion Studies
Who is it for?

This course is for intermediate to advanced CAD users looking to expand their existing 2D AutoCAD knowledge into the third dimension, to a nationally recognised standard. It is a cross industry course, suitable for Construction, Mechanical, Engineering industries.

You will work through 2 practical assessments and a multi-choice examination.

What could I do next?

  • CAD: Using Inventor, Autodesk's CAD/CAM/CAE modeller
