About the course

ECDL Extra is a highly recognised IT qualification in the workplace and is the preferred qualification for many employers. ECDL is the benchmark for digital literacy in educational systems around the globe.  On this course, you will learn to use a range of software for IT users including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation packages.

ECDL equips students with the skills to use a computer confidently and effectively, building on existing knowledge and motivating further learning.

The course runs as a drop in workshop, facilitated by a team of assessors, who will support and guide you through the material and prepare you for the exams.

The IT Centre opening times are:

  • Monday  9:00 – 16:30
  • Tuesday  12:30 – 20:00
  • Wednesday  9:00 – 16:30
  • Thursday 09:00 – 16:30
  • Friday 09:00 – 12:00

It is advised to pick a time that you can attend each week regularly as this has proved the most effective with past learners.

Entry Requirements

  • To have achieved an IT qualification at Level 1 or equivalent
  • Students must have English skills equivalent to level 1 to enable them to understand written instructions and information.
What will I do on this course?

You will study a variety of units to give you professional IT skills in:

  • Word processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Presentations

To gain the full IT Level 2 qualification you will be required to achieve this additional unit:

  • Improving productivity using IT

How Is this course assessed?

Examinations are carried out and you will receive regular feedback on your progress. Most of the learning will be done through the use of College workbooks, in a workshop setting, with tutors available to help where necessary. It is also possible to use the on-line facility to do extra practice outside of college.

What could I do next?

ECDL is a professional development qualification and can open up opportunities within an existing employment or for new employment.

This level 2 qualification can also provide skills for students to consider other courses within the college such as the Business Admin Level 2, or progress to do a Business Administration Apprenticeship.

There may be opportunities to do specific professional qualifications such as an AAT Accounting course.


You will need to come in for an induction, where an initial assessment will be conducted to establish if you have met the right level of literacy to complete the course. If this is not achieved, our team will support you in finding a suitable qualification, such as ESOL, to undertake before doing the ECDL.
