About the course

This qualification is a basic craft introduction to both the Carpentry and Joinery industry. This course gives you the opportunity to study both the knowledge and practical aspects of both Carpentry and Joinery at Level 1.

Entry Requirements

Essential Requirements you must have:  

  • range of qualifications which should include at least 3 GCSEs at grade E or above, including English and Maths (or equivalent)
    OR successful completion of an Entry 3 vocational qualification
  • an initial assessment at entry level 3 or above
  • a good record of attendance and commitment at school or college

Desirable Requirements

  • GCSEs in maths and English at grade D or above
  • An excellent record of attendance and commitment at school/college
  • A strong commitment to adopt a 'work-ready' approach, taking responsibility for your own development and behaviour
What will I do on this course?

This qualification consists of the following 6 mandatory study units and additional optional units. Your study has both knowledge and practical elements to include;

  • health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • knowledge of construction technology
  • produce woodworking joints
  • maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools

You may also be required to study maths and English as part of your course.

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for 16-18 year olds who have a keen interest to learn knowledge and skills to start a career in Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery.

What could I do next?

On successful completion of the course you may be able to progress to the level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery course. You could also apply for an apprenticeship in the Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery industry.

Additional cost

You will need protective footwear and a high visibility vest for practical sessions.
