Bench Joinery Level 2 for School Leavers City of Bristol CollegeThe Bench Joinery Level 2 course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and techniques involved in bench joinery.
This intermediate-level course is suitable for individuals who have some existing knowledge or experience in joinery and wish to further develop their skills in this specialised field. Throughout the course, students will learn how to interpret technical drawings, select appropriate materials and safely operate a range of tools and machinery used in bench joinery.
The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including the construction of basic and complex joints, the assembly of various woodworking components and the installation of doors, windows, and staircases. Students will also gain practical experience in using different types of hand and power tools, as well as understanding the importance of accuracy, precision and quality in bench joinery work.
Additionally, the course emphasises health and safety practices, ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to maintain a safe working environment throughout their joinery projects.

Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for 16 -18-year-olds who want to develop skills and knowledge in bench joinery.
What you'll learn
You will gain hands-on experience of setting and marking out for joinery components such as doors, windows and stairs.
You will also learn how to set up and operate a circular saw. You may also be required to study Maths and English as part of your course if you are progressing from Level 1 Site Carpentry.
Course entry requirements
4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including a 3 and a 4 in either Maths or English, or a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject, plus GCSEs in Maths and/or English, or a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and/or English.
We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.
Some Level 2 Technical qualifications may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course. This may include having English or Maths at Grade 4.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
This is a full-time course. Alongside your college tutorials, you will be required to take part in work experience and self-directed study.
You will be assessed in a number of different ways and receive regular feedback in reviews to guide your progress. Some of the ways in which your success will be measured are attendance, exams, online assessments, practical assessments and a portfolio of work.
Future career and study opportunities
Upon successful completion of the course, you may be able to progress to a Bench Joinery apprenticeship. You could also apply for an apprenticeship in the architectural joinery industry or obtain employment.
Additional costs
As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, you may likely need to pay for travel and stationery. You will need your own protective footwear for practical sessions, and will also need to buy a workwear uniform. You may also need ear defenders, protective goggles and gloves for some tasks.
