About the course

As an approved (CIOB) centre we offer this qualification which provides underpinning knowledge and skill to those individuals with the drive to develop themselves and ultimately improve career their prospects in construction management.  Successful completion of the Certificate can  lead to progression on to the two year part time Diploma.  We offer a 'twilight scheme' with attendance early evening, one evening per week over one year for the Certificate and a further two years for the Diploma.

Entry Requirements

The Site Management qualification is aimed at both practicing and potential site managers in the construction industry, individuals should normally have at least two years’ experience on site above the level of trade charge hand, with some general responsibility.  However, this does not always apply where applicants can demonstrate other appropriate experiences.  Applicants do not have to be in employment in order to study, as a wide range of backgrounds and differing lengths and levels of experience are catered for within the units.  The course has been designed with the practical entrant in mind, and gaining the Site Management Certificate and Diploma provides evidence to employers and clients that an internationally recognised level of study has been successfully completed.  The course is open to advanced candidates, however, there is no restriction on age but an assessment by the Centre for suitability will be required. Students will need one of the following qualifications, plus relevant construction experience at a supervisory/managerial level:

  • UCAS tariff Score 32-48 and relevant experience
  • Level 3 S/NVQ, or equivalent, in a related subject
What will I do on this course?

The qualification is internationally recognised and it also helps employers to satisfy Health & Safety and other EU requirements. After successful completion the qualification is judged to be the equivalent of a HNC/HND in Building Studies.

You will study a range of modules around your current site experience. Modules may include:

Who is it for?

This course is designed to meet the needs of those individuals that are employed in, or training for, site management. The course is aimed at the mature and practical entrant. All applicants are required to become registered with CIOB and are guided through this process.

How Is this course assessed?

Course assessment is based on individual work, group work, and practical assignments. The emphasis is on group participation and mutual learning with guidance from tutors. You should be prepared to spend time on private study and coursework in addition to attendance.

The full Level 4 qualification may take about two years, on a part-time basis to complete, although the length of the qualification does vary dependent on the course delivery timetable. The Diploma is awarded after completion 12 units 4 of which can be transferred from the certificate including the compulsory unit 'Managing Health, Safety, Welfare and Risk in Construction Works'. Candidates are also able to complete individual units and gain unit certification, this may count towards CPD or towards a full qualification.  In order to gain the full award there are twelve units to complete, these are based on assignment assessments which develop your knowledge and competence in the workplace.


For those who have already completed the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS), and have current certification, we can apply to the CIOB for exemption of the Health and Safety unit.  Other certificated qualification exemptions may apply, this will be considered after mapping the qualification specification against the particular CIOB unit.

What could I do next?

Candidates will commence on the Certificate and can then progress to the Diploma depending on levels of achievement and aspirations. Progression to an HNC, Foundation Degree or an Honours Degree may also be possible, subject to successful completion of this award.

Additional cost

The initial fee stated above is for the first year of study only and includes registration to the CIOB. Second and third fees are payable in addition to those stated above, less the course registration fee.
