Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production (TV and Film) City of Bristol College

This full-time 2 year course will enable you to develop your existing interest in creative media production. You will learn the skills required to make your own visual productions, as well as audio not only to create soundtracks for videos but for audio-focused productions such as podcasts and radio programmes.  

You will have the opportunity to create several media products, each focussing on developing specific skill sets. 

Completing these projects will lead to the Final Major Project, an opportunity to put everything you have learned into a more ambitious media product. This may be a film, animation, promotional video or other media project.  

You will largely have creative control of your productions and you are encouraged to explore your own ideas and creativity.

Who is this course for?

This course is for young people aged 16-18 and adults aged 19 who already have a proven interest in making media productions.  

What you'll learn

Filming, lighting, sound recording, video and audio editing, importance of locations and set design, and screenwriting.  

You will also become aware of the crucial role that research plays when developing ideas for productions, as well as learning about pre-production, planning and knowing your target audience.

You will develop the ability to critically self-reflect and to give effective and constructive feedback to others.

You will also learn about some of the different production roles in the media industry and will work in production teams with others, taking on specific roles and responsibilities within those teams.  

Course entry requirements

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria.

All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

If you are applying for a creative practice-based course, you will be invited to bring a portfolio of work that demonstrated what you have done in your previous courses.

5 x GCSE’s at C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate / Extended Certificate or above (at merit or above) in a relevant subject.

You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE C/4 or above, or L2 Functional skills in English and/or maths.

You don’t need to have a media-related qualification, but you must have a proven interest in the subject. For example, we would expect applicants to this course to have experimented with filming techniques themselves, perhaps posting their work on Youtube or other social media.

You must also be prepared to approach the course with a professional mindset, as you will be taught what will be required of you if you progress to working in the media industry. 

How is the course delivered and assessed?

You will work on a series of units throughout the academic year, during which you will learn and develop more technically challenging and ambitious creative skills.  

All assessment is through coursework – there are no exams.  

Future career and study opportunities

After completing the first year of the course, you can continue to study this subject in more depth in the second year.  

Some learners may choose to leave the course after the first year and progress to employment, into Higher Education or to an apprenticeship. 

After completing both years of the course, you may wish to progress onto a Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree at Higher Education Level. 

Additional costs

Students will be expected to buy some essential equipment. This includes an SD card, an external hard drive and headphones (with a mini jack).

Applications can be made to the Learner Support Fund by students from low-household incomes.
