About the course

This vocationally-orientated Foundation Degree in Graphic Design includes graphic design and digital media. It will enable students to engage with new media and emerging creative digital technology. Graphics and interactive multimedia are everywhere and touch all our lives - through the internet, interactive games, e-commerce, mobile apps, logos and corporate identities, editorial content and advertising.

Students usually need 56 UCAS points normally made up from:

  • A BTEC National Diploma in a related subject
  • AS/A2 (including a related subject or subjects)
  • A full Access Diploma in an appropriate pathway
  • Mature applicants with relevant experience and/or related qualifications are welcome to apply

What will I do on this course?

Students will develop graphic design outcomes across a range of media, exploring vocational concepts listed below. The emphasis is on creative practical projects and building a design portfolio that students can use vocationally to present to potential employers or continue with their higher education pathway. Students will work to create cutting edge print and digital design outcomes. Contemporary visual culture and awareness are key themes.

Who is it for?

This course is for people interested in design for print, interactive media and the internet, also photography, drawing, contemporary design and arts. You need to be excited by the prospects of exploring and experimenting with print based outcomes and digital media. An enthusiasm for well-crafted typography is also essential. A part-time pathway is also available & individual modules.

How Is this course assessed?

All assessment is continuous and will typically be by coursework assignments and projects. Methods include group critique, presentations and peer discussions and evaluations. You will be supported with individual and group tutorials.

What could I do next?

Upon completion of this course students will be prepared for employment within relevant industries e.g. graphic design; advertising; packaging design and development; internet design; and motion graphics.

Successful completion of the Foundation Degree is broadly equivalent to two years undergraduate study. Students completing the FdA may progress on to the final year of BA (Hons) Graphic Communication with Typography at the University of Plymouth or apply to a local University of their choice.
