The course will integrate a sound understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin therapeutic approaches in the creative arts, with practical work in a relevant context. 

Please note: this is a two year full-time course and the course fees printed below are per academic year only.

What will I do on this course?

By the end of the Foundation Degree you will have developed the skills and awareness to work practically in a variety of settings using creative arts. You will have gained knowledge of a range of relevant populations for example children and young people, older people, people with learning disabilities, mental health and service users. You will have a thorough understanding of the professional framework of creative arts in therapy.Modules include:

  • The Creative Process of Developing Self-Awareness  
  • Creative Groupwork and Performance Skills
  • Understanding the Therapeutic Process
  • Marketing Creative Arts Projects
  • Creative Expression with Words (Writing/Drama)
  • Creative Expression with Movement Improvisation
  • Creative Expression with Art Materials
  • Creative Expression with Music and Sounds
  • Arts and Health Projects

Throughout the course you will work in a practical placement setting in order to gain skills and enable the integration of theory and practice.

Who is it for?

This Foundation Degree is designed for those who work, or intend to work, with the creative arts - movement, drama, music, art and creative writing - to work with various groups within the community.

Assessment is through a variety of methods including:

  • A reflective journal
  • Coursework
  • Group work
  • Practical
  • Presentations 
What could I do next?

This course will enable you to work therapeutically using the creative arts in art, health, care or education contexts.Work may be in the statutory sector or community/voluntary settings. If you already work in creative arts and/or in one of these settings, this award will enhance your existing skills and thus your employment potential.There is currently progression to a BA (Hons) in Education Studies at University of Plymouth.

  • Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability. 
Additional cost

Once accepted on the course applicants must complete the DBS (Disclose and Barring Service) application prior to enrolling there is a charge of  £55 for this.  Once enrolled students must receive a satisfactory DBS disclosure to continue on the course. (All fees correct at time of printing)
