About the course

If you would like to be a Teaching Assistant but have little or no experience, this is the course for you.  It will give you the knowledge and experience to be able to work as a Teaching Assistant in a primary or secondary school.  You will attend college for around four hours a week for one year plus you will spend around one day a week in school to gain practical experience in the role. 

Entry Requirements

You will need an appropriate work placement in a school. Please discuss this with the tutor when you attend the interview

  • To be 16 years of age or over
  • Literacy skills to at least Level 1
  • On-line Literacy and Numeracy assessments will be given at interview
What will I do on this course?

You will be required to find your own school placement where you will gain practical experience as a Teaching Assistant in a voluntary capacity. The school will carry out a CRB check. There are 11 modules in this qualification covering the general role or a Teaching Assistant in school. These are:

  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Support children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Support children and young people's health and safety
  • Child and young person development
  • Support learning activities
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Support children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Schools as organisations
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools
Who is it for?

Maybe you have volunteered at your child's school or worked as a lunch break supervisor and wish to progress to a more challenging role. Perhaps you have recently completed a child care or related course at Level 1. Perhaps you have relevant experience in the past and wish to update your skills, or maybe you are considering a career change. Whatever your background, this course is the place to start your Teaching Assistant career.

How Is this course assessed?

You will compile a portfolio to provide evidence that you are competent over the 11 modules. This may take the form of:

  • Coursework
  • Reflective journal
  • Projects
  • Practical
  • Assignment based
  • Case studies
  • Observations
What could I do next?

On successful completion of your portfolio you have several options:

  • Suitable candidates may progress to the Level 3 Certificate
  • Undertaking related courses such as Makaton, Sign Language,First Aid
  • Employment as a Teaching Assistant at Level 2
