About the course

This one year Level 2 Diploma course serves as an introduction to engineering whether you plan to enter employment upon course completion or progress your education right up to university level. You may even be working in engineering at the moment and need to increase your skills to support career development. Whatever your aim you will follow a programme of education that will cover the knowledge, understanding and competencies required for employment within the engineering sector.  

Entry Requirements

These entry requirements are the minimum required, with an emphasis on mathematics:

  • 3 GCSEs at Grade D or above to include Maths, Science and English.
  • Performing Engineering Operations NVQ1 with a good record of attendance and grades achieved.

It is important for you to consider whether you enjoy science and mathematics as many engineering and technology roles are based upon science and mathematical principles. Additionally while you are learning we will need you to be:

  • Responsible for your learning and achievement
  • Willing to be challenged by new ideas
  • Enthusiastic

Who is it for?

It is important to have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in engineering products and services, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively. Although you need not have studied engineering previously you will still be expected to show an aptitude for the subject. This might be demonstrated by work experience you have had in an engineering environment or via study of Design and Technology subjects at GCSE level. We look for students that:

  • Are interested in the design and manufacture of engineering products
  • Want an opportunity to work with new technonlogies
  • Want to experience practical work and achieve qualifciation credits for doing so
  • Are employed in engineering industry and want to keep their career options open

How Is this course assessed?

The course is delivered through a combination of formal teaching, class exercises, individual and team assignments, laboratory exercises/assignments, case studies, videos and equipment testing and measurement.

Additional cost

There is a requirement to provide your own personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of boots and uniform/clothing. Pens, books, drawing equipment and a scientific calculator, will be required to complete this course satisfactorily (see Books cost).
