Who is this course for?

Interested in the design and manufacture of engineering products? Do you have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in engineering products and services and a willingness to explore new ideas then, this course could be for you. Although you need not have studied engineering previously you will still be expected to show an aptitude for the subject. This might be demonstrated by work experience you have had in an engineering environment or via study of Design and Technology subjects at GCSE level.

What you'll learn

Throughout this highly practical course you will follow a programme of education that will cover the knowledge, understanding and competencies required for employment within the engineering industry. You also will have an opportunity to work with new technologies and study the manufacture of engineering products.

Course entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including Maths and/or English or a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject plus GCSEs in Maths and/or English, or a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and/or English.

We will invite you to a Course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

Some Level 2 Technical qualifications may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course. This may include having English or Maths at Grade 4

How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered through a combination of formal teaching, class exercises, individual and team assignments, laboratory exercises/assignments, case studies, videos and equipment testing and measurement.

Future career and study opportunities

Future career opportunities include potential employment in a wide range of engineering companies or progression to higher level courses i.e. BTEC Diploma in Engineering Level 3 and apprenticeships.

Additional costs

You will need to provide your own personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of boots and uniform/clothing. You will also need pens, books, drawing equipment and a scientific calculator.
