Women’s Hairdressing Level 2 for adults City of Bristol College

This part-time, one-year course will give you skills and knowledge to help you find employment within the hair industry.

It can help you progress to a Level 3 course and Higher Education. You will attend college once a week for either a half-day or an evening class.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 19 and over who have a vested interest in the industry. You will want to turn your interest in hair design and styling into a creative, practical and sociable career.

This course has lots of opportunities for you to progress and develop.

What you'll learn

Hairdressing is an ever-popular industry in society.

With the help of this course, you will grow your knowledge from its foundations to grasp different areas of the topic. Subjects you will study include:

  • cutting
  • styling
  • colouring
  • shampooing and conditioning
  • communicating with clients.

The skills you learn can be transferred onto more advanced courses. This includes our Women’s Hairdressing Level 3 course.

Course entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including Maths and/or English or a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject plus GCSEs in Maths and/or English, or a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and/or English.

We will invite you to a Course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

Some Level 2 Technical qualifications may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course. This may include having English or Maths at Grade 4

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is taught at college in our industry-standard professional hair salons.

You will have opportunities to work with real clients and paying customers. In addition, you will take part in hair and photographic competitions, where you will refine and showcase your skills and creativity.

Your teachers have a wealth of professional and teaching experience as well as excellent links with local employers and industry experts. You will have the opportunity to attend talks from different industry professionals, such as Goldwell and Steiner.

Your work will be assessed continually through practical assessments, assignments and online assessments. If you study English and Maths, these subjects will be assessed by exams.

Future career and study opportunities

This qualification is recognised by The Hair Council, so you will be able to progress into a career as a junior stylist with a wide range of establishments such as hair salons, spas, hotels and cruise ships.

Alternatively, you could:

  • seek an apprenticeship to continue your training while you work
  • progress to a higher-level hairdressing course to develop your technical and creative abilities. This could extend your career opportunities, for example by working in fashion, media, TV or film.

Additional costs

You will be required to purchase a hairdressing kit of approximately £166.99 and a uniform in the form of a black hoodie at £22.80. 

If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
