About the course

This course covers Communication Skills with Children and Planning for the Physical and Emotional Needs of Children 0- 5 years, over 60 hours.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be at Entry Level 3 in English and above. Assessments will be done.

What will I do on this course?

This course not only covers communication skills with children 0-5, it also covers:


  • Play and development; investigating physical and emotional needs;

  • consulting with parents and children;

  • exploring care needs;

  • producing care plans;

  • sharing information with parents and staff;

  • nutrition;

  • affection;

  • safety;

  • hygiene and lots more.


This is a step before the level 2 Early Years course and working with children as a child minder or at a child care provider.

Who is it for?

This is a taster course for unemployed people who are considering a career in working with young children.

  • You must be in receipt of Job Seeker's Allowance (JSA) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
  • You must be able to commit to attending college either two days (9.30-16.00) for 2 weeks or 1 day (9.30-16.00) for 10 weeks

How Is this course assessed?

You will build a portfolio of assignments to evidence your learning. You must pass all assignments in order to gain the Award.

What could I do next?

You could progress on to a Level 2 course in Children's and Young People's Welfare or you could apply for a Level 2 Apprenticeship.

This into work course is free to those on any benefits, who are aged 19+.
