About the course

Working with children is one of the most rewarding careers. Children are valuable and making them feel special can give the carer a full sense of achievement. The course will give a good basic understanding of childcare including practical tasks, theory and a work placement. 

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSE Grade E's, including English Language grade E/2 or FS1, maths entry 3
What will I do on this course?

You will study a variety of topics to help you prepare for work with children. To give you an idea of the type of things you will learn, here are some examples:

  • Creative activities for young children
  • Musical experiences for young children
  • Valuing children
  • Child development in practice settings
  • Planning group activities
  • Books, stories and rhymes

 You will be expected to study Functional Skills or, if appropriate, GCSE English and Maths alongside the qualification.

How Is this course assessed?

You will be assessed through:

  • Regular portfolio assessment throughout the year, by which you will always know how you are progressing on course and given many opportunities to improve your performance.
  • Assessments in English and Maths at a level appropriate to you and are taken in small groups in classrooms.
What could I do next?

If you succeed on the course, receive positive placement feedback and obtain a good tutor reference you could progress to:

  • Childcare Intermediate (Level 2)
  • Health and Social Care Intermediate (Level 2)
  • Childcare Apprenticeship
