About the course

This new course has been developed to provide preparation towards employment in early years related careers. It is equivalent, in size, to three AS levels.

Successful completion of the course allows progression to year 2 and completion of the BTEC National Diploma CPLD (Early Years Educator - EYE). You will be taught through a variety of methods including discussions, group work and practical activities as well as real work experience in a range of childcare settings.

Entry Requirements

The course requirements are:

  • 5 GCSE's grade A*-C, including English or Maths (must have at least a GCSE grade D in Maths and English)
  • Previous experience of working with children, such as work experience
  • A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring service (DBS) check
What will I do on this course?

The course is divided into core and specialist units covering childcare related topics such as:

  • Working with parents and others in Early Years
  • Child development
  • Health and safety in early years settings
  • Reflective practice
  • Observation, assessment and planning
  • The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
  • Safeguarding in Early Years
  • Play and learning

This full time course is suitable for school leavers

How Is this course assessed?

You will be assessed in a number of different ways, including:

  • 2 hour exam (Unit 1: Child Development)
  • Attendance
  • Assignments
  • Practice Evidence Portfolio (PEP)


What could I do next?

Once progression to year 2 is completed, learners can:

  • Progress to university via UCAS
  • Progress onto other Higher Education courses such as a Foundation Degree
  • Practice as an Early Years Educator
  • Progress into employment in an Early Years setting
