This exciting, work-based programme, proven to raise the quality of practice in Early Years settings will empower you to transform your practice through reflection and research.

Entry Requirements

Students usually need at least two of the following:

  • Level 3 qualification in Early Years
  • At least two years' experience working with children from birth to eight years
  • Current employment working with children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (birth to eight years) or KS1 for at least two days per week.
  • You will be required to work a minimum of two days in your setting with the children and undertake action research and other assignments linking theory to practice.
  • Written support from your workplace offering a mentor and/or day release is essential.
  • Overseas students must have IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

What will I do on this course?

By the end of the course you will have demonstrated the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to good early years practice; you will have understood the theory underpinning early years education and care in different settings; be able to communicate ideas, principles, arguments and analysis effectively in speech and writing.  The course consists of seven modules and will cover topics such as:

  • Childhood
  • Children's Rights
  • Society and Culture
  • Social Policy
  • Safeguarding Children
  • Children's Holistic Health
  • Positionality, Inclusion and Diversity
  • How Children Learn
  • Observation and Assessment
  • Creativity

You will be assigned a tutor who will observe your practice and support your professional development.Duration: 2 years full time - 8 hours per week in College, minimum of 2 days per week in the workplace.

Who is it for?

The Foundation Degree is aimed at those who are currently working as Early Years practitioners and wish to gain a Level 5 qualification which may lead to Early Years Teacher status, management jobs in children's centres, or teaching.

What could I do next?
