About the course

Are you are interested in a career in health and social care such as social work or nursing? This course has been designed to give you in depth knowledge of health and social care and develop your skills to work with people in care settings. It is equivalent to 3 A Levels and will allow you to progress to jobs in the sector or university.You will study a wide range of topics and will spend one day a week in a range of settings including elderly care and vulnerable care.


  • Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course.
  • If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement.
  • If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees.

Entry Requirements


  • 5 GCSE grade C's, including English Language grade C/4, maths at a minimum of grade D/3 or Level 2 FS Maths


  • BTec Diploma at Merit

You will be enrolled on the 90 Credit Diploma, which is a one year course. Upon successful completion of year one, you can progress onto the Extended Diploma in year two.

You will study a wide variety of topics including:

  • Communication  
  • Sociology
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Psychology
  • Safeguarding
  • Human development  
  • Equality, diversity and rights
  • Caring for children and young people

You will also develop your study skills and carry out a research project. We will also make sure that you have the maths, IT and English skills that employers want. You will have the opportunity to resit GCSE Maths if required.

If you want to develop your skills and knowledge and progress either to jobs in the health and social care sector or to university, this course is for you.


How Is this course assessed?

You will be continually assessed by assignments and project work so you will always know where you are and how you are progressing. 

What could I do next?

On successful completion of the 90 Credit Diploma, you may wish to complete the Extended Diploma year and progress to university. You could also:

  • Start a career in health and social care, for example, as a care assistant, a youth worker, health professional or social carer
  • Progress to a Higher Apprenticeship in health and social care which combines paid employment with further study
