About the course

Speech and writing are central to human society. On this course you will explore the ways we use words to establish an identity, relate to others and adopt the many roles society demands of us. You will also develop your own skills by writing for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Entry Requirements

  • 6 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and Maths
  • GCSE English is particularly important for A Level English
What will I do on this course?

Exploring the language we use to find out how people speak and write in a variety of situations. This could be anything from a magazine to a menu, a poem to a political speech, a cricket commentary to a casual conversation. You will spend some time learning about the technical aspects of language study, such as grammar and phonology. You will use a range of computer applications, watch TV programmes and make recordings of spoken English. Topics covered during the course include:

  • The elements of language: sounds; words and meaning; grammar; textual organisation
  • How we use language to interact with others
  • The nature of spoken and written language and how they differ
  • The influence of new technology (computers, mobile phones etc.) on the English language
Who is it for?

This course is part of a full time A Level programme of 4 different subjects and will appeal to Year 11 students:

  • You should be curious about language and have an interest in developing your own written style
  • English Language combines well with English Literature, humanities and social sciences
  • If you want to specialise in sciences, this subject will broaden and add variety to your studies
  • Whatever your career aims, it will help to develop your analytical ability and communication skills
What could I do next?

Students go on to study for degrees in English Language, Linguistics, Creative Writing and Journalism. Others combine the study of English with subjects ranging from foreign languages to law, even dance! It's a useful preparation for a career in teaching, law and any area where clear and effective communication is essential.
