About the course

 The banking crisis, the spending cuts and the coalition government have all brought us into a new era of politics. The roles of Parliament and government will come under greater scrutiny than ever before and millions of ordinary people will want to influence the direction the country takes. Understanding the system of government is vital for every citizen.

Entry Requirements

  • 6 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths
What will I do on this course?

You will study institutions and processes making up our political system from Bristol City Council to the European Union. We hope to develop your critical abilities so that you can distinguish between spin and substance, policy and personality, democrats and demagogues. You will study:

  • People, politics and participation
  • Governing modern Britain - which covers Parliament and the government and the E.U

There will be discussion and debate. We will:

  • Take you on conferences to hear and question leading politicians
  • Invite local candidates into College for you to grill
  • Debate key issues in order to understand how the system works
Who is it for?

This course is part of a full time A Level programme of 4 different subjects and will appeal to Year 11 students who have an interest in current affairs, a burning sense of injustice or simply a desire to understand what is going on in the world around you, this is the subject for you. Democracy depends on well-informed and lively debate; let's help it along.

What could I do next?

Many students go onto study Politics, International Relations, History and many other subjects at universities like Exeter, Cardiff and Leeds. Opportunities for political researchers are available as well as direct involvement in Politics. In addition, many public services and businesses deal with government and are in need of expertise in how such institutions operate.
