Further Maths - A Level

Awarding Body

About the course

Further Maths A Level is more challenging than Maths A Level and is designed to really stretch you. Similar to Maths A Level you'll study core maths and statistics, mechanics or decision maths - all involving practical skills that will help you solve and simplify real life problems. The more challenging material, such as complex numbers and hyperbolic geometry, involves subjects you would study in the first year of a Maths Degree.

Entry Requirements

  • Grade 7-9 (A or A*) at GCSE Higher Maths
  • 6 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and Maths
What will I do on this course?

Further maths is studied at the same time as maths but in separate classes, so you have two lots of maths lessons every week. In both maths and further maths there are three modules studied throughout the year.

  • Two core modules building on the algebra, trigonometry and geometry you studied at GCSE
  • Statistics looks at methods of summarising data, probability and describing relationships between types of data
  • Decision Maths involves using algorithms, step by step procedures to solve real life problems involving traffic flow and time management
  • The third module is one of statistics, mechanics or decision
  • Mechanics has some similarities with physics and deals with motion, how and why objects move
Who is it for?

This course is part of a full time A Level programme of 4 different subjects and will appeal to Year 11 students:

  • If you enjoy solving challenging puzzles and have a real ability for dealing with numerical and logical problems AS Level Further Maths is for you
  • Further Maths is ideal for students who wish to study Maths or a maths-related discipline at university
What could I do next?

The majority of students who gain the A Level in Further Maths go on to university and take a range of subjects from Maths, Economics, Accountancy and Sciences through to Psychology, Music and English.
