About the course

If you are looking for a career in the motor industry and  a school Leaver, this course is the ideal starting point During the course you will learn a wide range of relevant practical skills in our fully equipped modern workshops, working on real cars.  These skills will then be backed up with theory sessions.  It is not all work though, you will be given the opportunity to go on industry related visits a well as team building events. 

Entry Requirements

  • 3 GCSEs at Grades 3-1
  • Entry Level 3 Motor Vehicle qualification (optional)
  • Record of achievement showing good attendance and punctuality
  • The motivation and determination to succeed
  • Good communication skills


What will I do on this course?

This programme will provide you with knowledge and the practical training you require to start you on the pathway to become a fully qualified motor vehicle technician. You will study in many different ways; practical tasks, assignment work, group activities, use of the internet and self study. On our programme you will undertake a number of modules and you will be required to be successful in all of them in order to obtain the qualification:

  • Health and Safety and Good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • Engine Cooling and Lubrication Systems
  • Braking
  • Steering and Suspension System
  • Fuel and Exhaust
  • Wheels and Tyres
  • Functional Skills
  • Contextual Maths and English

You will be expected to complete both theory and Practical Sessions with 75% being Practical. You be also asked to complete person Study during your time away from the college. 

It is expected that you gain 30 hours  of work experience in a motor Vehicle environment to improve your skills and Knowledge during this course.

This course is aimed at anyone who has a passion for cars. You should have the desire to learn and develop the skills necessary to maintain and repair motor cars. You will need to be a committed and determined person who wants to succeed and has the ability to work as part of a team.

Additional cost

Although all the tools and equipment are supplied, you will need to provide safety boots, protective clothing, writing equipment, calculator and paper.


On interview you will be required to bring with you your latest report from School or college and be prepared to take a Mechanical Aptitude test along with English and Maths Assessment
