About the course

This course will introduce you to your chosen vocational sector and will help you develop the skills you will need to progress onto a L2 course, an Apprenticeship or Employment.

You will complete a L1 BTEC Vocational Certificate and a L1 BTEC Certificate in Personal & Social Development.

You will take English & Maths Functional skills qualifications or resit GCSE Maths or English if you gain a grade 3 at school.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for level 1 include:

2 GCSEs grade 2 including Maths or English


Entry 3 Maths and English Functional Skills . 

We can also consider successful completion of any Entry 3 or another Level 1 vocational qualification.


What will I do on this course?

You will develop your personal and employability skills, undertake many practical activities and complete assignments .

You will complete these Vocational Units

Being Organised

Carrying out routine mechanical servicing of equipment

Carrying out routine tasks on a motor vehicle

Using welding processes to join materials

Developing a Personal Progression Plan

You will develop your Employability Skills & complete a BTEC Personal & Social development qualification.

You will undertake Volunteering or Work experience.

You will take an English & Maths Functional Skills qualification at the right level for you.

If you achieve a grade 3 for GCSE English or Maths at school you will undertake a resit in these subjects.

If you’re a school leaver and interested in the Motor Vehicle sector, this course is an ideal stepping stone towards achieving your ambition.

Additional cost

 The course is free to anyone between the age of 16-18.

You will need to provide safety boots, work gloves and protective clothing.

Financial support is available through the Learner Support Fund. Applications can be made through the College's Learner Services team.


You will need to attend an informal interview, please bring a recent school report & record of attendance.
