About the course

Are you interested in the uniformed public services? Would you like to know more about the many roles and responsibilities within the various services? If so, this course is for you. It will also help you to develop your personal qualities and attributes. This Level 1 course could be used as a progression route if you are interested in carrying on to the Public Services Level 2.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of GCSE Grade 2 / E in English and maths are required to be offered a place on this course as well as an interest and enthusiasm in Public Services.

  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • A respectful relationship with your group
  • You will need to demonstrate good general work place skills and a commitment to working within the industry
  • Personal interview

Experience of Public Services e.g. Army, Navy, Royal Air Force Cadets

  • Have some prior knowledge of the Public Services you wish to join
  • A willingness to try new activities
What will I do on this course?


You will cover a variety of subjects such as teamwork, crime and its effects, career planning and sport.

  • Sports & Recreation in the Public Services


You will also do other courses, depending upon ability, interests and skill level, to further develop your skills for the workplace. We will also make sure that you have the maths, IT and English skills that employers need.

Who is it for?

This course is for those looking to eventually join the Police, Fire & Rescue Service, Ambulance Service or the Armed Forces. You will learn about the work of the public services and the personal skills and qualities required for successful entrance. Together with this study of these public services you'll develop skills and confidence through Fitness and Outdoor Activities.

How Is this course assessed?

The Level 1 course is continually assessed throughout the year. There are no exams on the course but you will be assessed on a continual basis through the following:

  • Coursework
  • Group work
  • Practical
  • Observations
What could I do next?

On successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma, you will have a number of options for progression

  • Completion of Level 1 course at Merit level with an excellent tutor referral allows for progression to the Level 2Diploma
  • Progression to another Level 2 course
Additional cost

There will be a non-refundable £250 fee payable at enrolment. This will go towards the cost of uniform, college trips and transport.
