About the course

Do you want to find full time paid work in catering and hospitality, but need some extra support to get there? Into Catering will help you gain skills that will prepare you for a paid job.

Into Catering is a Supported Internship run by Bristol City Council, Sixteen Co-Operative Ltd and City of Bristol College working in partnership.

Entry Requirements

Young people applying to Bristol Supported Internships should:

  •         Agree that their goal is to work full time in paid employment at the end of the internship.
  •          Be aged between 16 and 24 years on 1st Sept 2018.
  •         Have received additional support at school/college because of a learning disability** and/or autism, and have an Education, Health & Care Plan.
  •         Meet UK residency requirements (have been living in the UK or European Union for the last 3 years)
  •         Have independent personal hygiene and grooming skills
  •         Maintain appropriate behaviour and social skills in the workplace
  •         Be able to communicate effectively, take direction from supervisors and modify performance
  •         Be willing to use public transport independently on familiar routes and do travel training to learn new routes if needed
  •         Have previous experience in a work environment (including work experience, voluntary or paid work)
  •         Be able to pass a DBS check if necessary and any other checks required by the host employer

** Note: the term ‘learning disability’ is used to describe people who have:

  •          A significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information or learn new skills, and a reduced ability to cope independently which started before adulthood and will have a lasting effect on development
  •          If you wish to apply to Bristol Supported Internships you will get advice and help with applying for an Education, Health & Care Plan.

Before joining Bristol Supported Internship Programme you will need to come to an informal selection day, and have a discussion to make sure this is the right choice for you. It may be appropriate for a visit to the Taylor Shaw food hall. You will also need to have an Education Health & Care Plan (EHCP). We can support you to apply for an assessment for an EHCP when you enquire about Into Catering.

What will I do on this course?

You will work 5 days a week during college terms, 9.00AM – 4.00PM each day. You will be based at the Taylor Shaw food hall, Ashley Down Centre. Interns spend two days per week with a tutor learning food preparation (kitchen skills) and hospitality (front of house) in the Taylor Shaw food hall at Ashley Down Centre. The remaining three days per week are spent in industry, with interns practising and developing their skills in preparation for work. You will attend two or three different catering rotations at different locations during the year. A dedicated tutor, job coach and learning coach will support you.

You will also do theory work, to learn about your rights and responsibilities at work, to help you work safely and follow food hygiene rules, to practise job search skills and to learn what makes a good worker.

Who is it for?

Into Catering is for young people aged 16-24 who have had additional support at school/college because of a learning disability and/or autism, and have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) saying what outcomes they are working towards and what support they will need to achieve their goals.

How Is this course assessed?

Each week you will agree targets to work on with your tutor and job coach, to help you learn the skills you need for your placement. You will be informally assessed throughout the year in your placements and through your class work. You will get a college certificate and a vocational profile at the end of the course.

What could I do next?

At the end of the year you will receive intensive support from a job coach to apply for full time paid work.
