About the course

You will immerse yourself in a wide range of highly regarded travel and tourism related activities and study. It offers the opportunity to explore the hugely exciting variety of employment opportunities that this expanding service sector has to offer. In addition to work in the sector, progression to university study is also an option for those who successfully complete this course.


  • Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course.
  • If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement.
  • If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees.

Entry Requirements

You will need:

  • Five GCSEs at C or above including English and Maths
  • A desire to learn all about the tourism industry

Good communication skills both verbal and written are desirable. Keyboard skills are also a benefit. If you are progressing from a level 2 Travel and Tourism course you will need to have achieved a merit grade overall and have an excellent attendance and punctuality record.

You will be enrolled on to the Diploma, which is a one year course. Upon successful completion of year one, you can progress onto the Extended Diploma in year two.

What will I do on this course?

Year 1

You will study a variety of topics including the history and development of tourism; you will investigate the various things that attract certain groups of people to a range of both UK and Overseas destinations. You will (with support and practice) be able to demonstrate your ability to deal with customers in a range of realistic situations. You will find this excellent learning for those of you wishing to pursue a career in this industry.

Year 2 - subject to new enrolment and fees ( where applicable)

In the Travel and Tourism  extended Diploma course you will add to your skills and knowledge and your preparation for working in the industry by investigating sustainable tourism, how we can avoid having a negative impact on communities abroad when we travel. You will learn about the management of visitor attractions and what life is like working abroad as a Resort Representative.We will also make sure that you have the maths, IT and English skills that employers need.

Who is it for?

You need to be excited by the idea of travel, have an enthusiasm for a variety of cultures and values and have a passion for providing excellent customer service. An interest in current affairs is an advantage, together with the ability to work both independently and as part of a supportive team. You will be introduced to an exciting industry and will want to be a part of it. You will need to be:

  • Able to motivate yourself to meet deadlines
  • Hungry to find out more about this industry

What could I do next?

Employment opportunities include Cabin Crew, events and hospitality, working in tourist attractions or as a resort representative overseas. On successful completion of the Diploma, you may wish to complete the Extended Diploma year and progress to university. Further study includes a broad range of degree options at various universities.

Additional cost

You will need to pay towards trips that will take place throughout the year.  If you are on low income you may be entitled to bursary funding for these costs.
