Last year there were over 33 million vehicles on our roads, so there is a constant demand for skilled technicians to repair and service them. With the rapid advancement of vehicle technology this work now involves high technological as well as mechanical skills.

So if you are physically fit, capable of working with your hands, good at solving practical problems and have a real interest in motor vehicles, a Light Vehicle Apprenticeship could be just what you need to get your career motoring in the right direction.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to repair and service a variety of motor vehicles to a high standard and carry out examination, inspection and fault diagnosis. You will work towards Key Skills qualifications and the technical certificate. You will also be given the opportunity to gain NVQ Level 2, the first step on the ladder for apprentices in the Motor Industry, or NVQ Level 3 which is the recognised level by the industry for a fully qualified technician.

What do I need?

Level 3 - 3 GCSEs grade C or better. Must pass assessment test if below C. Companies sometimes set entry requirements.

How long is the course?

This is a 2 to 3 year course, comprising both day or block release at College and full-time employment in a garage.

How will I know how I am doing?

You will be continually assessed in College and at your workplace and complete a portfolio containing evidence of your work. Written and online exams will have to be taken for some parts of the course.

How will this help me in the future?

Once qualified, you can continue to work in the industry, developing your practical skills and knowledge. There is also a range of career opportunities you could follow such as high-tech diagnostic specialist, workshop or dealership management, opening your own business, working overseas or even branching out into motor sport.
