Foundation Year for International Students
Preparing for your degree in the UK
This Foundation Year for International Students is designed to provide a route into higher education in the UK.
International students with a good academic background will benefit from this Foundation Year that will prepare students for their chosen degree course and for using English in an academic context. The majority of students on this course have successfully progressed to UK higher education degree courses.
The Foundation Year taught at City of Bristol College will cater for students interested in the following undergraduate degrees:
- Business Administration
- Accounting and Finance
- Computer Science
- Social and Policy Science
International students, and those from Bristol and the South West, choose to study at City of Bristol College because Bristol offers all the attractions of a buzzing big city, but on a manageable scale.

Content and Structure

During the Foundation Year you will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to progress to Year 1 of your chosen degree.
A key part of the course is to ensure that you develop the level of academic English you will need to succeed in your degree.
During the Foundation Year you will study the following units:
- Business
- English for Specific Purposes
- Mathematics
You will also study Information Technology and gain help to develop your academic study skills. A team of experienced lecturers will teach you through lectures, seminars and tutorials.
Progression to Undergraduate degrees
Guidance and support will be provided for those students who may wish to pursue a degree course at University.
Accommodation
Students studying at the City of Bristol College will be offered College accommodation in Bristol. Students should submit an 'Application for Accommodation' form as soon as they have accepted a firm offer of a place on the course. Applicants who apply before the end of July will be guaranteed a place in Hotwells House, the off campus College residence which is situated in the city centre. Alternatively, it may be possible to arrange to stay with a family as a paying lodger.

Entry qualifications
Applicants who would be suitable for the Foundation Year include those with high quality overseas qualifications which are of high quality but which are insufficiently advanced for direct entry into a UK degree course.
You will also need a minimum English Language level of IELTS 5.5 with a minimum score of 5 in each individual component. Other acceptable English qualifications are GCSE in English at grade C or above, TOEFL 520 (paper test) or 190 (computer test).
