Courses for 14 - 16 Year olds

The curriculum offer provides learners aged 14 to 16, who are in year 10 and 11, with two distinct routes to study and gain a vocational qualification through the College.

These vocational courses are offered as an alternative to or in addition to learners attending school, a Pupil Referral Unit or an Alternative Learning Provider.

The courses offered are run in highly equipped workshops and are taught by industry-trained staff and are offered in a wide range of vocational subjects.

We also offer infill on to post 16 Entry Level ESOL courses.

Full Time Learners of Statutory School Age (Early College)

This curriculum offer is aimed at 14-16 year olds who have for a variety of reasons been unsuccessful in mainstream education but are considered mature enough to infill with post 16-18 year old learners onto an Entry/Level 1 or Level 2 vocational course. These learners remain on the school roll and the place is funded by the school.

As part of the offer the learners must attend and take an appropriate Functional Skills Qualification in English and Maths. All learners have a Personal Tutor and the Early College team provide experienced Student Advisers to support the learner’s progress and to ensure regular communication occurs between the referrer and the parents/carers.

Some of these learners continue to attend their previous establishment alongside the College placement to take GCSEs or to develop personal and social skills. The learners can access all welfare and support services provided by the College.

Schools Partnership Programmes (School Link)

This curriculum offer is aimed at 14-16 year olds who are attending mainstream education but would benefit from, as part of their weekly school curriculum, the opportunity to experience college life and gain a recognised vocational qualification. The learners attend for two years from Year 10 for half a day a week or for a full day if only attending in Year 11.

We also run taster sessions for small groups of Year 10 and 11 learners. These groups attend for half a day and experience a carousel of vocational courses that helps to inform their progression choices post 16. We can offer a small qualification that recognises their participation in this taster carousel or a College Certificate.

The main vocational areas we offer are:

  • Catering
  • Motor Vehicle
  • Construction
  • Hair and Beauty
  • Art & Design
  • Care
