On 15th November 2017, City of Bristol College Apprentice Charlotte Marshall will be competing in the final of the UK Skills Show.

Charlotte, who works at The Style Room in Pill, has recently completed her Level 2 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing and will be competing in the 3-day event at the NEC in Birmingham, before continuing on to do her Level 3.

Charlotte says: “Doing this competition has definitely improved my skills and made me a better hairdresser. I am in the salon, even in my spare time, practicing. I work with my mentor, Jo, and communicate any ideas with her.”

Jo Tuckwell, owner of The Style Room and Charlotte’s employer says: “I am very proud of Charlotte. She’s very confident when doing hair-up challenges. We recently put out an advert at the salon, for long-haired models for Charlotte to practice on, and her whole afternoon was booked up.

“The competition is something that really takes over your whole life. I often find myself doing one thing and then an idea for Charlotte will pop into my head and I just have to tell her straight away. We are always talking about it.”

The UK Skills Show will see Charlotte faced with a range of tasks, from cutting and styling the hair of two live models, to the “3 wishes” challenge, in which judges randomly select 3 components that must be included in a hairstyle, and contestants have to incorporate these into their final piece.

Throughout the competition, City of Bristol College has recognised Charlotte’s talent and continues to support her in any way it can, as she heads to the final.

Deborah Luke, Learning Leader for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy at City of Bristol College says: “We are so proud of Charlotte’s achievements in the UK Skills competition, already. This is a competition that attracts competitors from all areas of the UK.

“Charlotte has demonstrated her commitment, ambition and most importantly skill and creative flair. This is an opportunity that Charlotte has worked hard for and is very well deserved.”

On her plans for the future, Charlotte says: “I’d like to continue working with Jo and the girls in the salon once I have finished my Apprenticeship. I couldn’t have done this without their help.”

The UK Skills Show Final takes place at the NEC Arena, Birmingham, from 16th – 19th November.
