College cones take over Stokes Croft

Elaborately decorated traffic cones could be seen throughout Stokes Croft in Bristol recently as City of Bristol College students showcased their work during the annual Heritage Trail.

Jasmin Rogers, Art and Design student at City of Bristol College.Designs ranging from shower heads to giant mannequin hands could be seen throughout the area, as cones were placed at different businesses around Stokes Croft. The event was part of a series of educational projects culminating in the trail.

The project was facilitated by Myers-Insole Local Learning, an organisation focused on bringing understanding and appreciation of Bristol's heritage and culture to the city.

College students had the option to choose a local business they wanted to base their cone designs on, with the aim of celebrating the chosen organisation and Stokes Croft. Over 13 cones were designed and distributed to the different businesses in the area.

Student Katrina Helvin, studying Level 1 Art and Design, commented: “I decided to design my cone on Treasure, a shop that has nick knacks and puts its profits back into Stokes Croft. The mannequin hand in the window inspired me to design my cone and I’m really happy with the result.”

Student Jasmin Rogers commented: “I’ve really enjoyed making this cone and I’ve loved to be able to build this design into what we’ve learnt on the course.”

Cathy Bowstead, Lecturer at City of Bristol College, comments: “It was an incredibly exciting event to get involved in. The students worked to a really high standard and this was a great opportunity for their talent and creativity to be showcased”.
