Linking maths and storytelling
The conference, called ‘Playing with Mathematics’, will demonstrate and explore the imaginative link between maths and storytelling.
Through lectures and practical workshops, attendees will be able to explore the value of engaging with practical materials as a way of bringing maths alive. The conference will also look at the need for a cross-curricular approach to teaching maths.
The event is aimed at those working in nurseries, children’s centres, primary schools and local authorities.
Programme
Held on 29 April between 9.30am and 4.30pm at the College Green Centre, the conference will include presentations and workshops on areas such as:
- ‘The relationship between soup making, story telling and sums’
- ‘Enriching play and conversations about mathematics’
Shirine Borbor, Events and Conferences Manager at City of Bristol College, comments: “This conference will be a great chance for delegates to learn more creative ways of engaging their pupils and students. Attendees will benefit from taking part in practical workshops that will show how to bring this subject alive.”
The speakers
Among the speakers will be internationally-acclaimed story teller Cassandra Wye, whose clients include the British Council, Friends of the Earth and early years agencies. Also speaking will be Steve Chinn, a dyscalculia expert with 40 years of teaching experience, and Elizabeth Carruthers, co-author of ‘Children's Mathematics’.
Other conferences
The event is the latest in a new programme of conferences planned by City of Bristol College under The Bristol Conferences banner. Other conference topics covered by this new initiative have included substance misuse, dementia care and partnership working.
