College launches volunteer programme for city youth

Image: City of Bristol College logo.City of Bristol College is looking to recruit young people from across Bristol and the surrounding area to take part in a new volunteering scheme called vtalent.

Vtalent is a full-time course aimed at 16-25 year olds, which results in a Level 2 qualification in Community Volunteering. The scheme has been launched through a grant from v, the National Young Volunteers’ Service, and follows their research showing that one in three young people would consider full-time volunteering.

The vtalent programme

Students will work closely with Jessica Porter, the College’s Volunteer Support Worker. They will plan, deliver and review volunteering activities, while encouraging wider participation from students and improving the sustainability of volunteer programmes.

“We’re delighted to be launching this new and unique programme, which will help volunteers to develop their skills while making a meaningful difference to the College and local communities,” said Jessica.

“The volunteers will be involved in a range of learner support activities and will work on volunteering projects in themed areas including sustainability, student voice and health and wellbeing. Ideal for those not currently in education, employment or training, the experience they will gain and the accredited qualification they will receive will help them build a better future for themselves.”

The College has provision to recruit 15 volunteers a year for the next two years who will follow the programme for 44 weeks.

Students will also be entitled to claim a subsistence allowance of up to £100 per week to cover expenses, basic living and travel costs. On completion of the programme, volunteers can apply for a Personal Development Grant of up to £1,500 to support their learning and development in future.

vTalent is a nationwide programme and is part of v’s wider investments in full-time volunteering.

Terry Ryall, v’s Chief Executive, said: “v is delighted to award City of Bristol College this grant to support full-time volunteering among 16-25s. We believe it will unleash young peoples’ talents and bring valuable new support services to the College community.”
