College runs volunteer programme for city youth

Ever wanted to be the editor of a magazine or inspire others to make art out of recycled materials? City of Bristol College is running the vTalent programme which enables young people to gain experience in volunteering, achieve qualifications and make a difference in communities across Bristol through innovative projects.

The scheme was initially launched in 2009 after receiving a grant from v, the National Young Volunteers Service, and follows their research showing that one in three young people would consider full-time volunteering.

Previous students from 2009 were given the opportunity to get involved in activities such as student open days, promoting the benefits of volunteering, supporting the College’s charity of the year ‘The Julian Trust’ and running sustainable projects to raise awareness of unnecessary waste during Christmas.

The most successful project that vTalent volunteers worked on was creating a steering group which worked closely with the College’s counselling service. The aim of the group was to help secure further funding for mental health organisations, raise awareness of mental health issues that may affect College students and to inform those affected by mental health of the help available.

Students will work closely with Jessica Porter, the College’s Volunteer Support Worker.

“We’re delighted to be running vTalent for a second year. The programme enables volunteers to develop their skills whilst making a meaningful difference to the College and the local communities,” said Jessica.

“The volunteers will be involved in a range of student engagement activities and will work on volunteering projects in themed areas including sustainability, student voice and health and wellbeing. This programme is ideal for those thinking about taking a year out to develop their project management skills before starting their chosen career.”

She adds: “This course not only offers the opportunity to make a real difference but it allows those involved to gain vital work-based skills and experience.

vTalent information events will be held at College Green centre on Thursday 26 August from 11am-5pm and at Ashley Down Centre on Friday 27 August 9am-4pm. Prospective volunteers will be able to watch videos, find out what is involved and receive guidance on how to apply.
