South Bristol Skills Academy wins environmental award
City of Bristol College has received an environmental award for its newest centre, South Bristol Skills Academy.
The award, which was presented to the College by the Bristol Civic Society, recognises new or renovated buildings or buildings which are used imaginatively.
City of Bristol College was one of only eight organisations from across Bristol to be recognised at this year’s awards ceremony. The College’s centre in Hengrove Park was commended for its innovative design, its role in the community and for playing a key part in the regeneration of south Bristol.
The building was nominated by members of the public, who were encouraged to put forward sites in Bristol which they believe are an important improvement to their environment. Criteria for the annual awards include choice of building materials, measures to minimise environmental impact, the building’s response to its context, its character and benefits to the local community and the public.
City of Bristol College’s Principal Keith Elliott, who received the award from the Bristol Civic Society, commented: “South Bristol Skills Academy provides fantastic state-of-the-art facilities in which local people can gain the necessary skills and qualifications for work. We are delighted that its contribution to south Bristol has been officially recognised by members of the public and by the Bristol Civic Society.”
Stephen Wickham, Chair of the Bristol Civic Society, commented: “South Bristol Skills Academy is a great example of innovation, quality and sustainability. The building’s striking exterior, coupled with its light and airy interior, makes it an iconic building that is also very user-friendly for students and staff. The judges were very impressed by the building and we were delighted to hold our annual awards ceremony there this year.”
South Bristol Skills Academy opened in September 2010 and provides a state-of-the-art learning and working environment for City of Bristol College students and staff. It provides a range of courses to help young people and adults gain the skills and qualifications they need for work or further learning.
The building was designed by architect Christopher Brain, who sadly passed away before he could see his vision completed. A road in Hengrove Park has been named after Christopher as a lasting reminder of his hard work and visualisation.
