Aeronautical Engineering

This course will give you a good understanding and practical skills in a range of aeronautical engineering skills. These include:

  • Photo: Two aeronautical engineering apprentices stand in front of an aircraft. Aircraft fitting – the process of building the parts of the aircraft that are sent to the final assembly line.
  • Customer services – dealing with technical support and maintenance throughout the life of an aircraft.
  • Manufacturing engineering – turning designs into manufacturing reality. This is where new designs or improvements to design drawings are translated and realised as products.

The College is the preferred apprenticeship education and training provider for Airbus. For more information about careers in engineering, the apprenticeship programme and Airbus go to the Airbus website.

What will I need?

If you are applying for an advanced apprenticeship you must have a minimum of four Cs at GCSE (or equivalent) including Maths, English and preferably Science, Design Technology, Information Technology or an Engineering related subject.
For higher apprenticeships you must have a minimum of two A Levels (or equivalent). Preference will be given to applicants with Physics or Maths plus six Bs at GCSE (or equivalent).

How long is the course?

This is a three-year course with your first year spent at City of Bristol College, and your second and third years spent on-site in Filton.

How will I know how I’m doing?

You will learn the basics of technical engineering including hands-on aspects of the discipline in your first year.
During your second year you will undertake a variety of placements within the organisation, carry out on-the-job training, while continuing to attend College on a day-release basis.
In your third year you will work in a specific role within specific a business unit.

How will this help me in the future?

You could become a Technical Data Engineer – creating and updating the technical information used to support modern aircraft; an Aircraft Fitter – building aircraft parts; or a Manufacturing Engineer – working across all the aircraft programmes and sites, interfacing with many departments.
