Brickwork

Photo: Brickwork apprentices practice their skills.If you want to work in the brickwork trade this apprenticeship is for you. The Brickwork apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the breadth of skills and knowledge you need to work as a bricklayer in the construction industry.

You must be committed, have a keen interest in brickwork and the building trade, and have the determination and motivation to succeed. Bricklayers build, maintain, repair and refurbish a range of structures, brickwork and masonry.

What will I learn?

As a bricklayer, you will learn how to set out a building and understand sizes and quantities. You will learn about blockwork, brickwork and cavity walling and have the opportunity to construct various brickwork projects in the practical sessions. During the third year you will construct arches and learn about contact management.

What do I need?

You need to be 16-18 years old and be employed with a firm that can offer you a range of experience in brickwork and building.

How long is the course?

The 2 year course allows you to gain an NVQ Level 2. Completing the third year gives you the opportunity of attaining an NVQ Level 3.

How will I know how I am doing?

You will be required to gather evidence from your work activities to demonstrate that you have become competent in a range of skills. At College and in the workplace you will have regular reviews to check you progress on the apprenticeship

How will this help me in the future?

Once qualified you can continue to work in the industry, developing your practical skills and knowledge.

There are also a range of career opportunities you could follow including site management, estimating and surveying. You could even work overseas or start your own business.
