Electrical installation is a vital part of just about every business and home - a constant supply of electricity is needed for lighting, heating, computers and many more essential systems. As a result, electrical installation skills are always in demand and the earning potential is high.

If you have excellent hand eye co-ordination, good colour vision with a decent level of fitness and are prepared to work carefully and methodically in all conditions, then this course could be the first step to a rewarding career in Electrical Engineering.

What will I learn?

This is a practical course that is completed by attending College one day a week and through on-the-job training with an employer for four days of the week. You will have the opportunity to practise new skills and learn from the example and guidance of qualified electricians both at the College and at your employers.

What do I need?

GCSE Maths, English and Science - grade C. Full-time courses require a grade D.

How long is the course?

This is a 4 year course. You will spend one day a week at College along with block release training.

How will I know how I am doing?

You will be regularly assessed in your work place. The assessor will look for evidence in your site diary and will carry out on site observations of your competence, knowledge and understanding of tasks and procedures. This information is incorporated into your site diary in order to complete the units and achieve your NVQ. The College assessors will work with your employer to ensure that they provide an adequate range of work in both commercial and industrial installation in order that you can achieve the NVQ.

How will this help me in the future?

The successful completion of all the elements below will allow you to register with the JIB (Joint Industry Board) for an ECS (Electro-technical Certification Scheme) card. This will allow you to work on any JIB contracting site.
