Working on magazine shoots? Preparing models for the catwalk? Styling hair on a cruise ship? Running your own salon?

Photo: A hairdressing apprentice puts the final touches to a client's hairstyle.As a successful hairdresser these are just a few of the career options open to you.

If you like meeting and working with people, have good communication skills along with stamina, patience and concentration and an interest in making people feel good about themselves, then hairdressing could be your pathway to success.

What will I learn?

You will learn all about the practical and theory aspects of hairdressing, such as shampooing, conditioning, perming, colouring, cutting, styling, dressing and finishing hair, and consulting with clients. You will also learn the importance of health and safety and the benefits of promoting products and services. Key skills qualifications are also part of the Apprenticeship framework.

What do I need?

An excellent record of attendance and punctuality is essential, along with salon employment as an apprentice for a minimum of 16 hours per week.

Plus for Level 3 NVQ 2 in Hairdressing, Key Skills Application of Number and Communication Level 1.

How long is the course?

The programme can be completed in two years (Level 2) and one year (Level 3) in conjunction with employment in a hairdressing salon.

How will I know how I am doing?

You will be continually assessed in college and at your workplace and also complete a portfolio containing evidence of your work. You may have to take exams for some parts of the course.

How will this help me in the future?

Achieve a professional competence in hairdressing. Developing your hairdressing skills and knowledge to progress in your career area.

Level 2 – on successful completion the natural progression is NVQ Level 3.

Level 3 – this course will give you a range of advanced hairdressing skills and understanding of the industry, opening a variety of employment opportunities.
