Photograph: A plumbing student working in a bathroom.People will always need plumbers. Good plumbing is not only essential to public health but is also a vital part of modern day living. The plumbing industry offers various career paths, good wages and the opportunity to run your own business.

Advances in plumbing and heating technology ensure that there are many new employment opportunities and with the current skills shortage you should always be in demand. If you have a reasonable level of literacy and numeracy, the physical skills to manipulate tools and equipment in cramped conditions and good social skills then plumbing could be the ideal career for you.

What will I learn?

What do I need?

Ability to pass assessment test.

How long is the course?

The 2 year course allows you to gain an NVQ Level 2. Completing the third year gives you the opportunity of attaining an NVQ Level 3.

How will I know how I am doing?

You will be required to gather evidence from your work activities to demonstrate that you have become competent in a range of skills. An assessor will also observe you in the workplace.

How will this help me in the future?

Once qualified you can continue to work in the industry, developing your practical skills and knowledge. There are also a range of career opportunities you could follow including heating engineer, plumbing contractor, site management, estimating and surveying.
