Be prepared for the interview

Below are some sample questions which you may get asked during your interview. It will help if you have thought about your answers before the interview.

You need to research the industry for the course that you are applying for.

For example, if you're applying for a catering course answering: "Because I want to be a chef" is not sufficient. You will need to give reasons of why you want to become a chef, what is it about food that motivates you and give some examples of chefs in the industry that inspire you.

What are your interests at school, including favourite subjects and/or any other responsibilities?
Don’t just say what your favourite subject is, explain why you like it.

If you are in a sports team, member of the student council or part of any other team at school tell the interviewer about it. Explain why you joined the group and what you enjoy about being in the group.

What are your experiences of taster/work experience, and full/part-time employment?

If your placement was related to the course you have applied for, tell the interviewer what experiences you gained that you can use in your course.

If your placement wasn’t related to your course, explain why you did that placement and any transferable skills you learnt that you can use in your course.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

It's always good to be able to answer this question. Don't say: "nothing".

Tell the interviewer about your hobbies and interests outside of school – sports teams or clubs you may belong to, or any other interests you have such as reading, music, films, sports team you support.

Give a brief personal history of yourself

This is your opportunity to talk about yourself, and for your confidence to show through. Talk about your family, where you live, which school you attend etc.

What are your future career plans/ideas?

Talk about what you want to do once you complete the course. For example, go to university or straight into employment. Tell the interviewer how you think the course will help you achieve your goals.

How will you get to College?

Showing you have considered how you will get to College will demonstrate your commitment to the course. Research bus routes or other methods of transport.

Good luck!
